Happy Friday! The Camellia, Thunder Bay, On

Happy Friday everyone! Do you have those days where you wish you were somewhere else? Like here looking at the tulips in Lisse, Holland, at Keukenhof Gardens... Of course, the -25 temps. here in Thunder Bay  have something to do with this...

Wish I was here .... enjoying the bouganvillea blossoms at Gran Bahai Principe in Mexico...

Wishing that the birdies would return... I know they are here, but the yellow finches  turn kind of grey in the Winter, and it's so cold , they are hiding today. They love thistle seed so I should refill their feeders..

We have Willow Wreaths for sale in the Shop...these go quickly, so just saying..if you want one.. call and order or put 1 on hold.

You can enjoy the Garden all year round with this wreath ...made with Peonies and lemon leaves from our very own Gardens!

I have to remind myself that LIFE IS GOOD! This pillow is in stock at the shop, a great addition to your decor, and also a nice pillow for a Gift for someone special!

However, at this moment I am supposed to be working on Purse Bouquets for a Wedding..so adios!
Have a great Friday!

The Camellia is OPEN today, Friday, Feb. 8, 2013,  11-5, Sat. Feb. 9, 11-5. Sun. Feb. 10, 12-5

California Dreaming, The Camellia, Thunder Bay

We're back after taking a short break...just going through California withdrawal right now. You know those TV commercials you see for California ...well, they're true!! Here's a peek into TESORO, a wonderful Flower shop in Sonoma Valley. They are at 23566 Arnold Drive, Sonoma CA 95476. p-707.939.6931.

Another incroyable shop in Sonoma Valley. The owner sources out antiques from all over the World. His displays are awe-inspiring. ARTEFACT Design & Salvage at 23562 Highway 121, Sonoma , CA 95476.

No coats needed in the Valley. It feels like you're in Tuscany or Provence. Pinch me, I must be dreaming...

And yes, there was a Winery, way on the top of the hills, that grows Lavender. And you are so lucky, if you come into our store, you can purchase their products right here at The Camellia.

We were able to tour the Barn where the lavender is very carefully dried.

The shops, well, they are over the top. It is after all, California. The largest number of billionaires in the  whole world apparently reside in California. This is a french-themed store in Sonoma.

A visit to the San Francisco Flower Market, yes, here I am, lusting after the Manzanita branches...oooh..I would so love to be able to get these home!!

Everywhere you go, the Camellias are blooming..and the Gardenias..and the Magnolias...sigh..

A visit to the Alameda Antiques Fair, here is the booth of Atelier de Campagne. So many treasures, 800 vendors, so little time...

The view of the Vineyards, framed by an Olive tree. Looks like a postcard...

What did I see as we were driving along in Napa Valley? There was a house Tour at Cardinale Winery, sponsored by the magazine Traditional Home, and I GOT TO GO ON THE TOUR!! Here is a peek into the entranceway..

A panorama of the view from the Show house, which is the Guesthouse of Cardinale Winery.

The fabulous Veranda......

The rooms were a wonderful mixture of rustic elegance and traditional elements.  Cardinale is at 7600 St. Helena Highway, in Oakville, CA. They are open for tours until November 11th, 2012. For more information and tickets, visitTraditionalHome.com/napashowhouse

We hope you'll be as excited and inspired by this little peek into California as we were!

Some like it HOT, but some like it cool..The Camellia, Thunder Bay

Some like it HOT, but some, like my Golden above, like it cool. How about you? Do you view the approaching Fall with dread, or are you a bit fed-up with the heat and high humidity?

Plants are still blooming away ... here are Heavenly Blue Morning Glories.  It's been such a hot, tropic-like Summer, and the plants have been loving it. As long as you can keep up with the watering....

And today, even though it's maybe 100 degrees out, we're thinking Fall, and busy changing displays and adding our new Fall product to the store.

With all the flowers still blooming in the Garden, Bouquets can be quickly thrown together. I like to use branches laden with apples, and Grapevine branches , heavy with grape clusters.

Time to start thinking about decorating for Fall - here are simple fern bundles from the Farm

At Camellia's, we have fabulous new Purses, and lots of evening bags with bling.

One of my favourite activities in the Fall - going for a walk or a Hike.

Have a fun long weekend, and be sure to stop in at Camellia's! Open Wed. through Sunday.
Sat. 11-5, Sun. Noon-5p.

30 Hacquoil Rd. ( No, this is not in the boonies or out in the back of nowhere..!)
It's a simple 10 minutes from the Thunder Bay Airport, heading south along Hwy. 61 .
We'd love to see you!

Summer is flying by, Camellia's, Thunder Bay

Summer is just flying by...hard to believe it's already August!! Hope you're taking some time out for some Summer R & R!

We've been lucky with the weather..lots of blue skies and tropical rains...the gardens are exploding!

Great weather for beaching at Lake Superior...and the water is refreshing, and not too cold. Have you been to the beach lately?

Hard to believe that Goldens need rescuing....www.golden-rescue.net.

Easy DIY with Rhubarb leaves

Rhubarb leaves are so plentiful in the garden at the moment. You may look at them and think, well, they're too big to use in an arrangement.

You can roll them up like when you're making a sushi wrap, then use green wool to bind.

Use purple floral dye in the water, or mix red and blue food colouring into the water.

Add a faux or fresh Dahlia, and voila! A 10 minute masterpiece!

Looks like some exotic tropical leaf, but it's just Rhubarb.

So much texture, it'll be interesting to see the leaves change after they soak up the purple dye.

Camellia's - Open Wednesday through Sunday.
Today, Friday June 1st. 11-6. Saturday, June 2nd.  11ish to 5, Sunday, June 3rd. 12-5

Planting for a Summer Garden full of blooms

Here's the entrance to the Castle in Belgium where Floralia Exhibition is held. This Gardens was planned with the help of the Dutch Bulb and Flower Growers. It is approximately 1 and a half hours drive over from Holland.

Spectacular displays of Spring bulbs were to be seen everywhere, some were a tad bit damaged by the unusual cold temperatures. Note the skilful combination of Colours.

Such soft colours of Narcissus! It is truly inspiring to visit this Exhibition.

Oh to have such a pathway to stroll down! I love the green mossiness that seems to be on all the trees.

and this Archway....you can imagine Ladies promenading under this arch, twirling their parasols.....

There are spectacular Floral displays in the Greenhouses, here you can see the Gloriosa Lilies which were bought at  the auctions, they are to be used in the massive displays of Floral art throughout the Exhibitions. I think I read somewhere that they change the flowers every Friday....10,000 of them.

Here are some of the floral displays being constructed.

As you leave the grounds, there is a Shop selling all the bulbs you have just seen planted on the grounds.

Ranunculus - one of my favourite flowers! Upon asking the experts on site...."What is the trick to growing freesias, ranunculus and anemones? I was informed that these bulbs are tricky and very hard... so the suggestion was made to soak  bulbs in some water before planting.

Hmmm...will have to try this..

Thanks to our Tour guides, Ron from Floraculture International, and our other wonderful Tour Guide, Ed.
